Antiplatelet agents are drugs that prevent platelets from clumping together and sticking together, the small cells in the blood that are involved in the initial phase of blood clot formation. Thus, they act as blood thinners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants <\/a><\/strong>are two main classes of drugs used to prevent thrombi (blood clots) from forming, but they work in different ways and have different indications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Platelets play a key role in stopping bleeding by forming a clot when a vessel is injured. However, when they are activated incorrectly, it can lead to the formation of dangerous clots in the vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antiplatelet agents are most often prescribed to prevent blood clots in heart disease, especially after a heart attack or stent placement, and in patients at high risk of stroke. They block the action of various factors that stimulate platelets to stick together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How antiplatelet agents work<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Platelets are small blood cells that play an important role in the initial stage of blood clotting. When a blood vessel is injured, platelets are activated, adhere to the damaged vessel wall, and begin to stick together, forming an initial "plug" that stops the bleeding. This process is called platelet aggregation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Antiplatelet agents work by preventing platelets from sticking together and forming clots. This is done by blocking various biochemical pathways that lead to platelet activation. Depending on the exact mechanism, antiplatelet agents can be divided into several main groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Aspirin<\/strong>: One of the most widely used antiplatelet agents.       Ischemic heart disease (IHD)<\/strong>: Patients with CHD, including those with a previous myocardial infarction (heart attack), are at increased risk of new coronary events due to the formation of blood clots in the coronary arteries. Aspirin and other antiplatelet agents such as clopidogrel are often used for long-term prophylaxis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)<\/strong>: Patients with acute coronary syndrome (unstable angina or myocardial infarction) are often treated with a combination of antiplatelet agents (eg, aspirin and clopidogrel) to reduce the risk of recurrent coronary events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Prevention of thrombi in surgical interventions<\/strong>: In certain surgical interventions, such as vascular operations or coronary artery bypass grafting, antiplatelet agents are used to prevent blood clots from forming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
